Opioid Abuse Guidelines

ACOEM has been in the forefront in addressing the issue of the overuse of opioid therapy to treat chronic pain. As part of this ongoing effort to curb this epidemic, ACOEM has provided the ACOEM Guidelines for the Chronic Use of Opioids FREE to the medical community. The 25-page opioid guideline was developed for -- and is also included in -- the Chronic Pain chapter of the 3rd edition of ACOEM's Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines. (Recently, ACOEM's Chronic Pain guidelines were one of six sets of guidelines examined by the Journal of Managed Care Medicine in the article Recommended Opioid Prescribing Practices for Use in Chronic Non-Malignant Pain: A Systematic Review of Treatment Guidelines.)
