    CAREERS IN OEM: FROM ACADEMICS TO WORKERS’ COMPENSATION TO PUBLIC POLICY AND BEYOND! — SEPTEMBER 20, 2012

    Presenter: Kathryn L. Mueller, MD, MPH, FACOEM, is Professor, School of Public Health and Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Campus, Denver, Colo. She is also Medical Director for the Colorado Division of Workers’ Compensation in Denver. Dr. Mueller received her MD from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, Neb., and her MPH from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. She is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine and the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners.

    Dr. Mueller is Vice President of ACOEM, a member of the Council on Public Affairs and the Council of OEM Practice, and is ACOEM’s Alternate Delegate to the AMA House of Delegates. She previously served terms as Director on the Board of Directors and as Secretary/Treasurer when she was also a member of the Executive Committee and chaired the Finance and Audit Committee. Dr. Mueller has served as Chair of the Council on Government Relations, the President’s Committee on Workers’ Compensation, Committee on State Government Relations, and Committee on Courses and as Associate Chair of the Committee on Practice Guidelines. She was also a member of the Emergency Preparedness and Response, Personnel, Bylaws, and Enduring Materials and Distance Learning Committees, and of the Future of OEM Training Task Force.

    Dr. Mueller is a past president of Rocky Mountain Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (RMAOEM) and has served that component as a member of the ACOEM House of Delegates, on the Board of Directors, and as Vice President. She also represented RMAOEM as their Delegate to the Colorado Medical Society House of Delegates.

    Dr. Mueller has been significantly involved in the development and dissemination of ACOEM and Colorado evidence-based guidelines. Her experience includes teaching residents and practicing physicians, and working within political environments to advance awareness of our specialty. She also served as a Section Editor for the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 6th edition, and have written and lectured internationally. 

    MAKING HEALTH A WORKPLACE PRIORITY – NOVEMBER 18, 2010

    Presenter: Pamela A. Hymel, MD, MPH, FACOEM is Chief Medical Officer for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, where she is responsible for developing a holistic approach to occupational health and wellness. Previously, she was Senior Director, Integrated Health and Corporate Medical Director for Cisco Systems, responsible for the strategy and design of Cisco's health and productivity program worldwide. In 2009, Dr. Hymel received an award from the National Business Group on Health for Excellence and Innovation in Value Purchasing.

    Dr. Hymel served as President of ACOEM 2009-2010. She is on the Board of Directors for the National Business Group on Health (NBGH), the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) and the Integrated Benefits Institute (IBI). She recently worked on an expert panel for the Institute of Medicine (IOM), contributing to their report on "Integrating Employee Health: A Model Program for NASA."

    Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Dr. Hymel received a BS degree in biology from the University of California at Irvine, a Masters of Public Health degree from Tulane University, and an MD degree from the Louisiana State University Medical School. She is board certified in both internal medicine and occupational medicine.

    FROM FAMILY MEDICINE TO OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE– October 28, 2010.

    Presenter: T. Warner Hudson, MD, FAAFP, FACOEM, is Medical Director of the UCLA Occupational Health Facility. Dr. Hudson earned his medical degree at the University of North Carolina Medical School in Chapel Hill and completed his residency at the University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento.

    He is board certified in Family Medicine and Occupational Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM). Dr. Hudson has served on the ACOEM Board of Directors since 2005 and is the President-Elect of the College. He will begin his ACOEM presidency in March of 2011.  

    FROM INDUSTRY TO THE OSCARS – THE AMAZING POSSIBILITIES FOR OCC DOCS! – JUNE 23, 2010.

    Constantine J. Gean, MD, MBA, MS, FACPM, FACOEM is Regional Medical Director, Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., Glendale, CA. Associate Clinical Professor, Volunteer Faculty at UC Irvine (Chair of the OEM Residency Advisory Committee). He also chairs the Opioid Sub-Committee for the Medical Advisory Committee for the State of Oregon.

    Dr. Gean performs Utilization Review oversight in his current role as Regional Medical director at Liberty Mutual, and has previously been a Utilization Review Physician for the CA State Compensation Insurance Fund. He has done Medical Reviews in the past as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Unum Corporation, and as Vice President of Operations (and later Corporate Medical Director) for CORE, Inc., a disability insurer. Also, Dr. Gean has been the back-stage doctor at the Academy Awards™ since 1999.

    Dr. Gean is the 2009 ACOEM President's Award recipient. He has been lead author for two books, The Pocket Drug Guide and The Index of Prescription Drugs, and he was the recipient of the 2008 Jean Spencer Felton Award for Excellence in Scientific Writing given by the Western Occupational and Environmental Medicine Association (WOEMA). He writes the regular features "News You Can Use from the Literature" and "Interesting and Useful Web Sites" for WOEMA. 

    OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE IN THE FIELD – THE NIOSH HEALTH HAZARD EVALUATION PROGRAM – MARCH 31, 2010

    Presenter: Judith Eisenberg, MD, MS, FACEP, is a medical officer with the Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) Program at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The Congressionally mandated HHE Program responds to requests from employees, management, unions, and other federal, state, and local agencies to evaluate potential occupational health hazards at workplaces throughout the nation.

    The HHE program offers a unique multidisciplinary approach to workplace evaluations with physicians, nurse epidemiologists, industrial hygienists, psychologists, health communications specialists, and statisticians on staff. If someone is interested in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) at NIOSH or rotating with NIOSH, please contact Dr. Eisenberg at jeisenberg@cdc.gov

    Dr. Eisenberg received her medical degree from Hahnemann University, now Drexel College of Medicine, in Philadelphia, her MS in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida, and completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center. She is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, is a certified MRO by the MROCC, and is a certified Professional Supervisor by CAOHC.

    She originally joined the HHE Program in 2004 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer. After completing her 2-year EIS assignment, Dr. Eisenberg remained on staff as a medical officer and has since conducted numerous health hazard evaluations. 

    OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MILITARY, AS A PHYSICIAN IN UNIFORM OR AS A CIVILIAN PHYSICIAN IN GOVERNMENT SERVICE– OCTOBER 20, 2009

    Presenters: COL Tim Mallon, MD, MPH, FACOEM, is the occupational medicine consultant to the Army Surgeon General, and the occupational medicine residency director for the National Capital Consortium.

    Commander Patrick Laraby, MD, MS, MPH, MBA, FACOEM, a graduate of the UC San Francisco residency and past president of the New England College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, works at the Pentagon–Chief of Operations-International Health, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) Force Health Protection and Readiness. He has extensive occupational medicine experience in the US Navy, including time spent at shipyards and overseas.

    COL Laura Torres-Reyes, MD, MPH, FACOEM, a graduate of JHU OEM Residency Program and Former Consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General in Occupational Medicine, is assigned as Staff Director, Defense Medical Standardization Board, Fort Detrick, MD. 

    EXECUTIVE HEALTH - A PRACTICE OPPORTUNITY FOR SOME – MAY 27, 2009

    Presenter: Robert R. Orford, MD, CM, MS, MPH, FACOEM, is the immediate past president of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM). Dr. Orford is Consultant and Former Chair, Division of Preventive, Occupational Medicine, and Aerospace Medicine, at Mayo Clinic Arizona in Scottsdale. He is an Assistant Professor at Mayo Medical School and Associate Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Dr. Orford received his MD and CM from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, his MS from the University of Minnesota, and his MPH from the University of Washington in Seattle. He has been certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in internal medicine and community medicine, by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine, aerospace medicine, and public health and general preventive medicine.  

    CAREERS IN GOVERNMENT SERVICE – April 1, 2009

    Dr. Sokas rejoined the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in November, 2008, as Director of the Office of Occupational Medicine in the Directorate of Technical Support and Emergency Management, a position she previously held from 1997 – 1999. She has served as Lead Medical Officer and the Associate Director for Science at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Both OSHA (occupational medicine residency rotations) and NIOSH (EIS officers) have training experiences for physicians.

    Early in her career she served in the National Health Service Corps as a member of the US PHS, and delivered clinical care to migrant and community health centers. Following occupational medicine training, while a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, she practiced at the Philadelphia VA and managed the hypertension screening and detection program. Other faculty appointments included the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. Her research publications evaluate the impact of occupational exposures on common health outcomes, training intervention effectiveness in health care and in construction, and novel approaches to addressing the needs of immigrant, high-risk, contingent and low-income workers.

    Dr. Sokas received her M.D. from Boston University School of Medicine, her M.Sc. and M.Occ.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health, and is board certified in occupational medicine and in internal medicine.

    Dr. Longmire has served as a medical officer in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Office of Occupational Medicine (OOM) since 2000. He is currently the director of the OOM Medical Resident elective and serves as medical officer for the OSHA Nuclear Specialized Response Team. Prior to assuming his current position, he served as a Medical Review Officer at the US Food and Drug Administration. He is board certified in occupational medicine and clinical pharmacology. 

    PUBLIC HEALTH, CORPORATE MEDICINE AND OEM CONSULTANCY – March 11, 2009

    Presenter: Mark A. Roberts, MD, PhD, FACOEM
    Principal Scientist, Exponent, Inc. Wood Dale, IL

    Dr. Roberts brings 17 years of experience as a health officer at the Oklahoma Department of Health where he provided epidemiological support to the Department's communicable disease and environmental health efforts as well as served as spokesperson for community health issues. From 1990-97, he was on the faculty at the Medical College of Wisconsin in the Department of Preventive Medicine. He was course coordinator for Occupational & Environmental Health lectures and resident training and provided consultation services to area companies and public health agencies. Dr. Roberts has a PhD in Biostatistics and Epidemiology, an MD from the University of Oklahoma, and is Board Certified in Occupational Medicine. He has participated in a number of Boards, Committees and Advisory Panels. Prior to joining Exponent, Inc. in 2003, Dr. Roberts served in corporate medical capacities of advancing responsibility for Amoco and BP Petrochemical companies from 1998-03. He joined Exponent in 2003 and is a Principal Scientist in the Chicago office. He is currently working on projects involving health issues related to solvents, mold, asbestos, CAFOs, and is part-time medical director for two city health departments, an OEM consultant for four companies, and consults with companies on various environmental and occupational exposures.  

    THE MEDICAL REVIEW OFFICER – January 28, 2009

    Presenter: Karl Auerbach, MD, MBA, MS, FACOEM, is Associate Professor of Clinical Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. Dr. Auerbach received his MD and MBA from the University of Rochester, and his MS in bioengineering from Polytechnic Institute of New York. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, certified in occupational medicine. He is currently the Treasurer of ACOEM. He performs MRO activities as part of his clinical practice. He is a certified MRO both by MROCC and AAMRO. He is the moderator of the MRO List, an international e-mail list for MRO practitioners.  

    CONSULTING IN OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE – November 18, 2008

    Presenter: Dr. Hartenbaum is President and Chief Medical Officer of OccuMedix, Inc., a consulting practice located in Dresher, Pa. She also holds several other positions including both an academic and clinical appointment at the University of Pennsylvania, Chief Medical Review Officer of FirstLab, and Medical Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. In addition, consulting services are provided to various companies, medical and legal practices. She received her MD from Temple University School of Medicine and her MPH in occupational medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine in occupational medicine. She is the Vice President of the ACOEM Board of Directors.  

    PRIVATE PRACTICE IN OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE – Wednesday, October 15, 2008

    Presenter: Peter P. Greaney, MD, FACOEM, is the company president of WorkCare. He is board-certified in occupational medicine and family practice and is a specialist in toxicology. He has been formally trained in OEM at the Southern Occupational Health Center at the University of California, Irvine, where he is currently a faculty member. Dr. Greaney has designed occupational medicine programs for a variety of companies and serves as a corporate medical director consultant to numerous national companies, ranging from biotechnology, environmental engineering, and pharmaceuticals to specialty chemical and utility companies. His service includes providing consultation in occupational medicine/toxicology, assessing potential on-site health risks, implementation of federal drug abuse detection programs and multi-site medical surveillance programs. Dr. Greaney has been a featured speaker at a number of NIOSH symposiums, including Steps to a Healthier US Workforce and Best Practices in Workplace Surveillance. He is also the former Speaker of ACOEM's House of Delegates. 

    ACADEMIC OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE – September 16, 2008

    Presenter: Denece Kesler, MD, MPH, FACOEM is a faculty member of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque, NM. She provides oversight for a variety of University programs that encompass such areas as clinical occupational health services, employee wellness, and regulatory compliance. In addition she actively participates in research and education activities. She received her MD from the University of South Dakota, her MPH from the University of Minnesota, and completed her residency in St. Paul MN. She serves ACOEM in various roles including chair of the ACOEM Council on Academic Affairs, Chair of the MOC Committee, and is a representative to the House of Delegates. She is a trustee of the American Board of Preventive Medicine and is a representative to the American Board of Medical Specialties.  

    MEDICAL CENTER OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH – June 20, 2008

    Presenter: William G. Buchta, MD, MPH, MS, FACOEM, is Medical Director for Employee Occupational Health, Division of Preventive, Occupational and Aerospace Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. He received his MD from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, his MPH from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and an MS from Purdue University. He is the former chair of the Medical Center Occupational Health Section, one of ACOEM's 20 Special Interest Sections. He is currently Speaker-elect of ACOEM's House of Delegates and Chair of the Council on Special Interest Sections. Dr. Buchta is Board Certified in Occupational Medicine and in Public Health and is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine.
