Commercial Driver Medical Examiner
Type: Course Start: Friday, July 10, 2009 End: Friday, July 10, 2009 Time: 8:00am - 4:30pm Location: Chicago, Illinois
More than eight million truck and bus drivers are required to meet the 13 interstate federal medical requirements. Nine of these requirements are left intentionally vague and provide a great deal of latitude to the medical examiner. Examiners may be physicians or any health care provider licensed by their state practice act to perform examinations. It is critical for all persons involved in such examinations to be fully aware of the available guidance and medical literature that should be considered as part of the certification determination. In addition, it’s important to have a comprehensive awareness of the issues involved in evaluating the medical fitness of commercial drivers.
ACOEM continues to strive to maintain the tradition of educational excellence and stay abreast of the training needs of our members. The updated Commercial Driver Medical Examiner course has been reviewed and revised. The added value of a “certificate of completion” opportunity will be available to those who attend the updated course, successfully complete the self-administered post-course examination, and turn in the required documentation to ACOEM. It is ACOEM’s intent that this course will meet the eventual educational requirements of FMCSA’s proposed National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.

Musculoskeletal Exam and Treatment Techniques
Type: Course Start: Saturday, July 11, 2009 End: Sunday, July 12, 2009 Time: 8:00am - 5:00pm each day Location: Chicago, Illinois
This two-day course will feature both lectures and interaction with a diverse faculty who will deliver a significant “hands-on” workshop component. The didactic portion will include lectures on general management of work injuries, causality analysis, orthopedic urgencies and emergencies, and the timing and choice of x-rays in addition to discussing examination and treatment techniques for individual body parts. The workshops will review selected aspects of the physical examination and give an overview of injection techniques.
Overall, emphasis will be placed upon those topics that will be of the most relevance to everyday practice. In addition to focusing upon the “usual” diagnosis and treatment issues, the faculty has drawn upon their own considerable experience in reviewing the work of other physicians who manage compensable injuries to get a sense of which aspects of patient care are most often deficient. As a result, this course will not only provide general information regarding the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, but also will convey how management of patients who have been injured at work differs from management of patients with non-work-related musculoskeletal complaints.
Course objectives will be achieved through a unique combination of didactic lectures and hand-on workshops. This approach will provide a comprehensive overview of general musculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment, and cover the diverse issues involved in caring for injured workers. This course is targeted to meet the educational needs of general practitioners who wish to review the management of musculoskeletal injuries. Consequently, while there will be discussion of some advanced topics, emphasis will be placed on providing a thorough review of basic information.
