     Career Center

Welcome to the ACOEM Career Center
The purpose of the Center is to acquaint physicians with the field of occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) – perhaps the widest ranging of all medical specialties – and assist them in finding employment in the field. Now, not only can you find information that will help you advance your career, but you can search for jobs or post an ad through ACOEM’s new on-line recruitment resource.

Occupational and environmental medicine belongs to the future. Devoted to prevention and management of occupational and environmental injury, illness, and disability, and the promotion of health and productivity of workers, their families, and communities, it is a specialty of unlimited challenges and opportunity. Because the majority of the population is employed, the need for specialists in the field continues to grow. Whether you are looking to enter the field, negotiate an employment contract, or change jobs, the ACOEM Career Center can provide you with the tools you need.

The ACOEM Career Center is a member of the HEALTHeCAREERS Network, an integrated network of dozens of prestigious healthcare associations. Tap into hundreds of healthcare disciplines by visiting the Career Center and selecting the box next to "Uncheck for NP, PA & other disciplines".

    Occupational and Environmental Medicine Competencies
Occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) comprises a spectrum of competencies ranging from those of the general practitioner to those of a highly trained specialist. The purpose of the ACOEM Competencies is to clarify the identity of the field of OEM in the face of a rapidly changing medical model and to enhance the understanding of what an OEM physician does and what an OEM physician has to offer society. As part of your career planning, you should review these competencies. The Competencies document is available on line at no charge – click here to access them.

    Certification in OM
Physicians who have chosen to devote the major part of their careers to the study and practice of occupational medicine may wish to enhance their careers by obtaining certification in the specialty. Please note, ACOEM is not a certification body – certification in occupational medicine, aerospace medicine, and/or public health/general preventive medicine is administered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Click here to access ABPM’s site containing the requirements for certification.

Making the Case for Employing OEM Physicians
Despite the fact that OEM programs have been demonstrated to be the logical link between employee health, productivity, and the bottom line, too often, OEM physicians are forced to “justify” their OEM program and employment. As part of the ACOEM Career Center, the College will begin to post on line studies that make the case for employing OEM physicians..
