Submitting Session Proposals

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) encourages experienced presenters to submit proposals for educational activities at upcoming conferences. Proposals should reflect professional-level offerings that address OEM competencies, and be supported by high-quality faculty and handouts.

TARGET AUDIENCE

ACOEM Conference attendees are generally physicians who specialize in or have an interest in OEM, as well as non-physicians who are involved in the field.

PRESENTATION FORMATS

SESSIONS
Sessions offer focused presentations that cover critically chosen, cutting-edge subjects related to OEM competencies. Sessions typically include multiple faculty members and are 1½, 3, or 6 hours in length. Sessions are designed for OEM physicians who practice in a variety of work settings (corporate, clinical, academic, consulting, government, etc.).

MEAL DISCUSSIONS
Meal Discussions are popular educational activities that offer the opportunity to share research and discuss issues of concern with peers and leading experts in subjects of interest to OEM physicians. The 1 hour activities include a light meal and are limited to 25 participants to encourage active discussion. Submitters should note that audio-visual equipment such as, computer projectors, screens and microphones, is not available for these rooms.

WORKSITE VISITS
Worksite Visits offer focused tours of various industries intended to give physicians a first-hand look at some of the health and safety issues they may encounter in diagnosing and treating their patients. Worksite Visits are normally 3 hours in length, not including transportation time to and from the worksite. ACOEM provides transportation and is respectful of requirements and rules for visitors. Submitters should contact the prospective worksite to gauge their willingness to participate before submitting the proposal.

Worksite Visit Framework:

  • Group size is usually limited to 40, although some sites may be able to accommodate more or less.
  • After the worksite visit, attendees should be able to:
  • recognize potential health hazards related to this industry;
  • explore how a particular industry deals with regulations and health hazards in the workplace;
  • review the occupational and environmental health issues related to this industry; and
  • describe the industrial process in this facility.
