  • Dow’s Catherine Baase, MD, Honored with 2012 Global Leadership in Corporate Health Award

    Catherine Baase, MD, chief medical officer, The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), is the 2012 recipient of the Global Leadership in Corporate Health Award, recognizing her career as a proponent of workplace health and wellness for Dow.

    The award, sponsored by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and the National Business Group on Health (the Business Group), honors the achievements of individuals who demonstrate excellence and leadership in implementing programs that improve the health and productivity of the workforce.

    Dr. Baase was recognized for her longstanding contributions to the field of health and productivity on a global basis. She has driven a global program at Dow that includes detailed metrics and continuous health improvement, and is regarded as one of the nation’s experts. Dr. Baase's longstanding leadership and vision have clearly advanced the field of health and productivity around the globe.

    “Dr. Baase was one of the early pioneers in workplace health and productivity management and has worked to not only advance health and wellness initiatives at Dow, but also has contributed greatly to the literature and scientific studies documenting the positive impact of quality workplace wellness programs,” said Barry Eisenberg, executive director of ACOEM.

    “As a corporate medical director, Dr. Baase has been an inspiring leader, visionary and role model for the nation. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to honor her work and career,” said Helen Darling, president and CEO of the National Business Group on Health.

    Dr. Baase has direct responsibilities for leadership and management of all occupational health, epidemiology and health promotion staff and programs around the world. She has made a lasting impact on the culture at Dow; the workforce values their own health and the health of their fellow workers as both an important corporate benefit and an important key to business success. Participation in health and wellness activities does not hinge on financial incentives; it is a cultural norm as these programs and services are highly valued by both leaders and employees.

    Dr. Baase received her medical degree from Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine. She is a fellow of both the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

    She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative, the Partnership for Prevention and the Health & Productivity Section of ACOEM. Dr. Baase also serves on the advisory board of The Institute for Health and Productivity and is a past advisory board member of the US Cochrane Center. She is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Health Promotion and previously, the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

    Dr. Baase has co-authored more than 15 papers in peer-reviewed journals on topics such as workplace health protection and promotion, Dow’s obesity prevention program, Dow’s ROI on health risk reduction, and the impact of chronic health conditions on worker performance and health and productivity.
