  • ACOEM Offers to Assist DOL with Review of Workers' Comp Systems

    February 19, 2016

    The Honorable Thomas E. Perez
    Secretary
    United States Department of Labor
    200 Constitution Avenue, N.W.
    Washington, DC 20210

    Dear Secretary Perez:

I understand that Members of Congress have requested the Department of Labor to re-institute oversight of state workers' compensation systems.

As the medical specialty devoted to the treatment and management of injured workers, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) is well positioned to inform the Department’s consideration of the request and we would welcome the opportunity to be part of the discussion.

ACOEM is an organization of more than 4,000 occupational physicians and other health care professionals, which provides leadership to promote optimal health and safety of workers, workplaces, and environments. Work fitness and disability management is a core competency of occupational medicine. Occupational physicians have become the nation’s leading experts in the complex interplay of factors that affect health in the workplace, helping organizations of all kinds ensure the health of their employees.

We suggest that any review of state workers’ compensation systems by the Department include disability benefits, as well the medical treatment provided to address the injured worker’s functional impairment and safe return to work.

We look forward to assisting the Department. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Patrick O’Connor, ACOEM’s Director of Government Affairs, at 202/223-6222 should you have any questions.

    Sincerely,

Mark A. Roberts, MD, PhD, MPH, FACOEM
