Perceived Workplace Health Support and Severe Psychological Distress Among Japanese Workers – A Prospective Cohort Study

Workers' perception of organizational support by their employers has been associated with improved physical health and workplace productivity but has been less well evaluated in terms of mental health. This study examined the extent to which perceived workplace health support affected the incidence of psychological distress in a one-year follow-up of 2362 workers across Japan. Results demonstrated a dose-response relationship between the increasing intensity of support and the decreasing incidence of psychological distress even after adjusting for confounders. This suggests that occupational health professionals can help to improve the mental health of their workers by promoting organizational support.
