The ACOEM Program for completion of Practice Performance (Part 4) of MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION© (MOC)

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) requires that diplomates of all specialties complete four components designated as the MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION© (MOC) when the diplomate undergoes board certification.  At the request of the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM), ACOEM has developed the program outlined within this booklet to assist you in completing MOC Part 4 requirements, which is required for ABPM diplomats with time-limited board certificates expiring in 2011 and beyond. You should plan on completing the booklet over the course of at least 6 months.

This booklet will guide you through completion of the required practice performance self assessment process: review of your current practice performance; identification of an area in your practice that you will target for improvement; development and implementation of a quality improvement plan; and a second assessment to verify improvement of your practice performance.

Who needs this?
American Board of Preventive Medicine diplomates with time-limited board certificates expiring in 2011 and beyond.

Why is this needed?
Diplomates are required to complete the 4 parts of MOC:

Part 1: Professionalism - Maintain unrestricted licensure
Part 2: Lifelong Learning – Complete MOC qualifying CME
Part 3: Cognitive Evaluation - Pass written examination
Part 4: Practice Performance – Conduct practice assessment

What is the intent of ACOEM’s program?
Completion of this program will result in fulfilling the Part 4 component of the MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION© requirements. This does not apply to the other three component parts as administered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

When should a diplomate complete this Part 4 process?
Diplomates must complete all MOC requirements prior to the expiration date of their certificate.  They can complete the Part 4 requirements at any time during the ten years of their certificate.

What does the ACOEM program involve?
The diplomate will be guided through a self assessment of their own practice using provided tools.  The program is straightforward and practical.

What is the cost?
ACOEM members will be charged $295 and non members will be charged $395.  The Part IV booklet may be purchased online through the ACOEM Product Catalog (www.acoem.org)

How long will it take?
While the time required to complete the activities are minimal, the program should be completed over a minimum of a 6-month time period. Please note that the review process of completed modules may take up to 60 days.
